How much does it cost to lease a horse/pony generally?
Terms for leasing a horse can be very flexible. I live in the Los Angeles area and a friend of mine recently leased a horse full-time for $465 per month. That means she had full use of the horse at any time and did not share it with anyone else. The owner paid for medical care, shoes, and training. Another person at my barn leases a horse for $275 per month and, according to the lease, can only use the horse three days each week. The rest of the week the owner rides the horse. For this lease agreement the owner pays for medical care and the lessee pays part of the shoeing costs. I know of other horse owners who have allowed people to ride their horses in exchange for barn chores, such as mucking stalls. Still other owners loan their horses to riders for free because they don’t have enough time to exercise the horses adequately.
