How much does it cost to change my sons last name?

If he is truly the birth father it shouldn’t be that big of a deal. My children had to wait until they were 18 to legally change their names because we didn’t want to deal with getting their father’s permission. With him vouching that he is the dad it should just be a matter of filing the paperwork. Go to the internet and look up filing for name change in your county. All the steps to take should be there. If he is under 18 you will just need both of the parent’s signature. Then you file the paperwork which in Illinois was about $100 then you have to post it in a local newspaper for a few weeks. The courts will set up a court date for about 6 weeks after you file. Then you just go to court and tell them why you want the name change and the judge usually will grant it if everything is in order. You DO NOT NEED A LAWYER…. don’t get sucked into that. they are expensive and you don’t need one for this. When it’s done they will tell you where to send the info to get a new birth certificat
