How much does it cost to add a teenager to a car insurance policy?
It varies by insurance companies. Technically, if your teenager does not have a car of his / her own, and uses yours, they would be covered by your insurance even if your insurance company is not officially notified that they are now driving. I have two boys, now19 and 21. We even went so far as to buy the oldest boy (co sign on a loan for him) and put his vehicle in our name and claimed it was a third car that my wife and I decided to buy. The problem with this is that if he would have had an accident, and he was negligent as teenage boys can be – WE would have been liable for anything not covered by insurance. By the time our next son was able to drive, our insurance company would not let us put another vehicle in our names. We decided at that time that we were not comfortable with our insurance company not knowing, and had each boy take out his own insurance under our family plan.
