Good question! Electricity is another traded commodity, so “the markets” are setting the price. Electricity is generally easy to transport, so trading is very practical, if you are not isolated. I live in a country where almost 99% of the electricity comes from hydro power stations, which, of course, use very cheap fuel, but the price to the consumer is set by the supply companies, and they trade it to the places where they can be paid the highest price. (That is what business is all about, of course). We are told, that the highest cost electricity comes from the coal fired power stations, so that sets the benchmark price, and whether you have electricity from coal, or gas, or nuclear, wind or hydro, the suppliers are going to be charging similar prices as if it is being generated in a coal fired power station.
