How much does it approx cost to have a horses eye removed?
I have no idea what it would cost to have the eye removed. I know in people it is a fairly simple procedure. It’s surprisingly non invasive. The worst part will be laying the horse down. I’ve helped with several simple surgeries that we just lay the horse down in the stall or out on the apron of the barn if the day was fine. Weird, but they all made it. This sounds like a case that needs to go to your vet school. I don’t know how it works Down Under. At the vet schools here, the diagnostics are very high quality, and very reasonably priced. I use Oklahoma State, and they charge only for physical materials used, not the expertise of the docs or report writing. You do pay full price to the anesthesiologist if he is needed, but that is such small potatoes! There are at least 3 full vets, often anatomy professors and the like, and 3 to 6 students. Horses who’re blind in one eye do just fine when they get used to it. My friend has had an appaloosa gelding for almost his whole life. When he was ten he went blind in one eye and started spooking all over the place for around a year. Once he figured out that everything was the same as before he went blind even though he couldn’t see it, he was fine and went back to his old bombproof self. You can do literally ANYTHING on a one-eyed horse that you can do on a horse with two eyes, even jump. As for the price, it certainly won’t be cheap considering how delicate of a surgery that is and the fact that the horse will need anesthesia. How expensive it is would really depend on what vet does it and where you are located. The most important thing is to find out if the eye actually needs to be removed or if it’s just ugly looking.
