How much does idling really hurt fuel economy?
Most idling is unnecessary and wasteful. For whatever reason, the engine is allowed to idle, fuel is consumed that did not move the load and is essentially wasted. Depending on the size of the engine and accessory loads, the engine can consume from .5 gal/hr at low idle to 1.5 gal/hr at 1000 rpm with the air conditioner running. For every 10% of total running time the engine is allowed to idle, fuel economy is reduced 0.1mpg. In a typical application, only 30 min. idle time every stop could reduce fuel mileage by 0.3 mpg.
