Policies for individuals cost $4,798 on average. In most cases, employers pay a big chunk of these premiums, but employee contributions in the state also are on the rise. The average employee paid $3,286 for family coverage in 2008, up from $1,749 in 2000. In that same time period, the median household income rose only 0.7 percent.
