How much does fixing a thrown rod cost for a 91 Honda Prelude shell?
A thrown rod means that it has come free from the crankshaft. It really means that there is going to be so much damage to the crankshaft , rod piston, valves in that cylinder , and engine block that your are better off selling it as is to someone who has the skills to replace the engine themselves. If you or someone you know has the skills then by all means – go to town – but you will never get out of it what you put into to it $$$$$$ wise.
If the rod went through the block, then you’re out the core charge and all that. So, as above, about $4,000. If you’ve still got a good core (which I doubt) a little less, maybe $2,500 – $3,000 Cheapest way out would be to get a used engine from a junkyard, but that’s risky since you’d be out for labor if that used engine goes away before you can afford to replace it again. Budget about $1,000 if that’s your deal. Selling your car for junk and using the money to make a down payment on a new one is your best bet. That and you’ll be amazed at what dealers will take in on trades, since most are facing overstock right now.
