How much does ECAR treatment cost per person per day (or per year)?
Our current prototype, which has not been optimized for energy consumption, uses 0.6 Wh/L, including energy for electrolysis and energy to agitate the water during treatment. Assuming energy costs of $0.50/kWh (a high end estimate appropriate for a solar PV panel), ECAR energy costs are 0.03 cents per liter (US $0.0003). About 51 mg iron is consumed during the process as well. In March 2010, the worldwide average cost of carbon steel plate was $706/tonne, adding an additional 0.004 cents per liter (US $0.00004). Total consumables (including energy and materials) for ECAR treatment thus total 0.034 cents per liter (US $0.00034/L). Allowing for 10L per person per day, this amounts to 0.34 cents per person per day, or about $1.24 annually.
