How much does Calliope factor into that?
For me, it’s actually everything—the band and the homestead we live on are very much tied together. My goal in life is to find a way to immerse myself into a more rhythmic way of life, and as much as possible put aside the distractions of mainstream culture, mainstream values. The notion of our homestead is that we can create a refuge from that and live according to our own desires—be masters of our own destiny, if you will. How much of a farm is Calliope? Do you grow your own food? Do you keep livestock? My partner does—she’s a very gifted farmer. We just keep poultry—chickens and ducks—but we have some neighbors right down the street who keep goats and sheep, so that’s where we get that sort of flesh. So between the vegetables and the eggs and the chickens that we grow in our farm, all of our needs can be supplied within a quarter-mile.
