According to the California Budget Projects October 2007 report, a full-time Bay Area worker who is single and has no dependents must make $14.25/hour just to get by. If the worker is a single parent, that amount increases to $31.67/hour. When a worker earns less than the amount necessary to get by, those costs are picked up by the community in some other way (emergency medical care, subsidized school lunches, increased police services necessary when children are left home alone, etc.).
