The question doesn’t make sense. If he’s a freelance then he’s not earning anything from an average newspaper company because he’s not employed by them. He’ll be paid according to what he feels he can ask for any particular story. For a freelance he needs to be looking for at least £400/day assuming he has a 30% chance of making that on any particular day or he’s not going to be able to feed himself. Better is to start as a salaried reporter for a provincial newspaper until he has made enough contacts and can go freelance. Really if he’s asking this kind of question he’s not ready to go freelance because he doesn’t know enough about the business.
