Depends on what capacity you’re working in as a defense lawyer. If you open up a private practice there are considerable start-up cost, for essentially you’re a small businessperson. You’ll have to do your own marketing to get clients. You could go to work for another attorney, but the salary will be low and NYC is a costly place to live. Another route is to work for the California public defenders office – a great way to get some experience but you’ll be representing some pretty bottom of the barrel criminals.
