How much do wolves prey on livestock?
Wolves prey on livestock including cows, sheep, llamas, goats, turkeys and dogs. However, wolves prefer to hunt wild animals and often take livestock only when wild game is scarce. Of the total livestock killed by predators in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming in a given year, only a small percentage (about 1% to 2%) turn out to be actually killed by wolves upon further investigation. A compensation program is available to farmers and ranchers who have livestock killed by wolves.
