There’s a lot more money in web programming and application development. Anyone can learn to write “web pages” in about two days. “Designing” is something more connected to things like graphics, layout and the like. Good web page writers know HTML, CSS, some JavaScript and feel comfortable working with images. Being able to manipulate images in programs like the GIMP or Photoshop is also a good skill. The big money, however, not on web page writing a design, but itn web applications. This requires knowledge of scripting and programming languages such as PHP, Perl, JSP (and hence, some Java) and perhaps ASP and C# if you work in a Windows-only environment. You also need a knowledge of how web server applications such as Apache, perhaps some database experience with MySQL or other RDBMSs, and some networking skill.
