How much do microbiologists make?
It depends on what type you want to be and where you live. Naturally wages will be higher where the cost of living is higher. I live in the midwestern U.S. so here’s some figures from my personal experience: Research microbiologists make ok money…about $30,000-40,000/year (even with a master’s degree!). Usually it’s for a university, so the benefits and insurance are outstanding, though. Food microbiologists make the least…it’s really sad. I RECENTLY did some work part-time for a national company to help out a friend and have a little fun. (I have a doctorate, mind you.) I made $13.46/hour. Yes, you read right, that’s $28,000/year if one were to work full-time! I know that other companies pay more, but not by much. Plus, many companies are just starting, and do not offer health insurance or other benefits…watch out for that. Clinical/hospital microbiologists make the most, but in many states, it requires an additional degree called “medical technology” or “clinical laboratory sci
