It varies greatly, depending on geographically where you are, what kind of interior design you do, how profitable the type of interior design is for the firm, your skill level, your experience level, your portfolio, your educational attainment, including certifications, licensing, etc. LEED AP’s (accredited professionals) are in high demand for eco-friendly work, the way the whole industry is going today. The designers who bring the most to the table get the best pay. Example: healthcare, senior living, and other institutional design is very hot right now in terms of demand, but a lot of these client organizations are non profit and don’t throw a lot of money around, so the fee is low, and the profit margin is low, so the designer’s pay is relatively low.
