The average graduate Interior Designer is fluffing pillows at Ashley’s Furniture store, making less than $25,000. Once in a blue moon when a customer actually wants to pay for design help, the designer gets to visit their home and help pick out drapes to go with the sofa they just bought. Unless you are already in the business on a lower rung of the ladder, it is very hard to get into. I hope you have some contacts or a friend in the business who will offer you a position. I believe they all work independently from within the same office and earn commissions based on the jobs they bring in to the company and how much the client ends up spending. Unless you are decorating for million-dollar homes, it’s hard to make good money.
