EIA estimates that U.S. households spent an average of $986 for heating during the winter of 2008-2009 (October through March), a decrease of about 0.4% over the previous winter. Estimates (as of March 10, 2009) for heating expenditures for households heating with: • Natural gas — $866 per household, 1% increase over the previous winter • Heating oil — $1,622 per household, 17% decrease • Propane — $1,642 per household, 2.3% decrease • Electricity — $925 per household, 7.
