How much did the District save by closing Baker?
There is some discussion in the community about the savings (or perceived lack of) obtained from closing Baker Elementary. We originally estimated the savings at approximately $347,000 which included minimal custodial costs and additional transportation costs for the students moving from Baker to Johnson or Kurtz Elementary schools. However, both the custodial and transportation costs are less than anticipated thereby increasing the savings to approximately $376,000 (greater than anticipated). There is also discussion on the repurposing of the building. When the Board approved the closing of Baker, Administration was asked to develop both a short-term and long-term plan for the use of the building. The short-term plan, placing a preschool program at the building and using it for Recreation and Community Education classes, was to ensure the building was used at a minimal level to address concerns by community members that we would leave an abandoned, deteriorating building in the villag
