The estimated cost of earthquake-related damage ranges from five billion dollars to more than ten billion dollars. And it was the Loma Prieta earthquake, located closer to Santa Cruz. We can’t prevent earthquakes. We can make the damage less by retrofitting buildings, having all new construction up to earthquake codes, working on updating the infrastructure (the Bay Bridge reconstruction has already begun).
