How much damage was caused by the Chesterton, Indiana tornado?
Thunderstorms pounded the Chicago area early Wednesday evening, as tornado-strength winds hit Kane County and Chesterton, Indiana. Today, heavy weather may move through the area in two waves, with periods of showers and thunderstorms in the morning and scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Tornado and severe thunderstorm watches were issued Wednesday evening by the National Weather Service for much of northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana and expired after storms rolled through the area. In Central Illinois, fierce rain and high winds tore through the area on Wednesday, leaving behind dozens of damaged homes and a handful of injuries, authorities said. Particularly hard-hit was Williamsville, where 16 buildings were destroyed by winds that hit about 3:15 p.m., according WGN-TV’s Tom Skilling. The National Weather Service reported a tornado touched down near Elburn in Kane County. And in northwest Indiana, Chesterton experienced a wind gust of 105 m.p.h. before 7:30 p.m
