How much corn is required to produce 1 kg of PLA?

The answer to this depends on the average starch content in the corn and yields of lactic acid in the polymerization process. Natureworks LLC has determined that on average, 2.5 kg of corn (15% moisture) is required to produce 1 kg PLA. The difference in weight between the finished product (i.e. PLA) and corn required to make PLA (i.e.2.5 kg of corn) represents mostly water, germ oil, corn gluten, and corn gluten feed.
