How much Complan Shake can a patient safely have?
This depends entirely on the rest of the patient’s diet. If a patient cannot, or will not, consume adequate food, using up to eight sachets a day (if mixed with water) would offer 1,500 – 2,000 kcal, without reaching undesirable levels of any nutrient. However, as Complan Shake cannot legally be called ‘nutritionally complete’, its use as a sole source of nutrition would need to be at the discretion of the clinician or dietitian. If the patient is still eating a normal diet (1,500 – 2,000 kcal per day from normal food), there is a risk of obesity if large volumes of Complan (more than 2 sachets a day) are taken, in addition to a normal diet, without an increase in exercise to match.
