Well let’s do a calculation. The 20 oz soda weights about 20 oz. Assuming about 1% of it is CO2 that is about 0.2 oz of CO2 per soda. Compare that to burning 1 gallon of gasoline in your car. One gallon of gasoline will produce about 20 lbs of CO2. So you would have to drink 1,600 sodas to release the same amount of CO2 as burning just 1 gallon of gasoline. The average driver in the US burns about 2 gallons of gasoline per day. I am guessing that there are probably one person who drives every day for each person who does not. If we assume each person consumes 2 sodas per day. That is about 4 sodas per day per driver. So now we can calculate how much of a problem drinking sodas is as compared to driving cars. That means that driving cars is about 820 times worse than drinking sodas. So sodas are not a major source of CO2. Update: The Meow Mix below me has the right idea.
