Research shows that every hour of exercise activity an athlete should consume a minimum of 200 calories, and 150 mg of sodium and equivalent balance in all electrolytes. However, remember that calorific demands vary based on weight, therefore 200 calories is the minimum for a 150 lb athlete, and 300 calories is the minimum requirement for an athlete who weighs 180 lb.
