How much calcium does skimmed milk contain?
I am worried about osteoporosis and drink skimmed milk in tea and coffee and on its own. Is there the same amount of calcium in skimmed as half fat milk? Also what about low fat cottage cheese – am I ok eating that? Skimmed milk has just as much calcium as semi-skimmed and skimmed milk – slightly more in fact because the fat portion is displaced by more of the watery part which is where the calcium is contained. Low fat dairy products will help protect you against osteoporosis as long as you drink the equivalent of a pint of milk a day (or a couple of glasses of milk and a yoghurt). Interestingly, milk may also make it easier for you to stay slim – a number of recent studies have shown that high dairy consumers eating the same amount of calories as low dairy consumers tend to be lighter and have less body fat. It’s not quite such good news on cottage cheese though – although it is really low in fat it’s nowhere near as good a source of calcium as the higher fat cheeses. As you are alre
