How much Benadryl can I give my dog?

0

I own a boarding kennel and can say that it is 1 mg per pound of body weight to start. Having said that, I have dogs the size of yours coming in to board with double that dose.. Prescription Benadryl, before it came OTC, was double the strength it is OTC. Some dogs it makes sleepy, most it does not. It’s a great inexpensive drug to try first. It’s used for rattlesnake bites! Another, more expensive drug for allergies is Atarax (hydroxyzine). It is very pricey, like $1 per pill so if the Benadryl works that’s great. I’ve also had dogs come in with Zyrtec and Tavist D. I would check with my vet before using these as they can aggravate an unknown heart problem.

I had to give my dog benedryl last month and the dr. said 1mg for every 1lb. every 4-6 hours. Hope this helps!

1 mg per pound of body weight, so for your dog that would be 100 mg.

my yorkie has allergies and weighs 10 pounds and i give him one benadryl so i would say no more than two. since an average human weighs a little over 100 pounds shouldnt take more than 2.
