How much are train fares in thailand?
I can’t say about the Chiang Mai to Suratthani, but I went between Bangkok and Chiang Mai this summer. I took the sleeper cars both way. Many backpackers do this – most of the people on the train were actually backpackers, not Thais, I believe. I don’t remember how many classes there were, so I’ll just tell you what I can remember. On the first trip from BKK to Chiang Mai, I went in an air conditioned sleeper car. This was more expensive, somewhere around 800-1000 Bhat I believe. I actually found this a bit too cold for me so I opted for the fan sleeper car on the way back. I think this was closer to 600-800 (a few hundred baht cheaper). I think there is a slight price difference whether you take the upper or lower bunk (I took the upper as it doesn’t bother me). I liked travelling this way. I have only ridden train a few times so I thought it would be interesting. It does take a lot longer than flying (I think 12-15 hours rather than 1.5), but you can do an overnight trip and just sle
