How much are taxi(cab) fares currently in Johannesburg, South Africa?

Taxi cab fees are not really a common means of transportation in Johannesburg and it is really only tourists that use them. The last time I used one was probably close to five years ago and I was charged R50 for a 6km trip (in fareness there were 3 of us in the cab but they charge the same amount regardless of the number of passengers). But another cab driver parked two metres away wanted to charge us R100. I would imagine it costs more now. If you do decide to go this route, be sure to agree Depending on how much you plan to travel, it would probably be more economical to rather rent a car for about R250 a day or if its day time you could perhaps take a bus if your destination is on a bus route (about R8). Or the Gautrain that has just launched (although its routes are still very limited). I would not recommend that you try a minibus taxi- beware of these.
