Would it surprise you to know that this is one of the questions I’m asked most often? It’s hard to answer this question meaningfully because of the variety of jobs that journalism entails. I earn more than some of my friends with the same education, and less than others. The NUJ published a survey in November 2002 which found that 17.6% of journalists earn under 15k a year, 28.7% of journalists earn between 15k and 25k, 27.1% earn between 25k and 35k. 8.2% of journalists earn over 50k according to the survey. How this pay structure compares with other professions or trades I don’t know. If this question is important to you, I can suggest you read job adverts to get an idea of what kind of salary is on offer for your kind of job. You will probably have to start out on a lower salary than the typical graduate starting salary.
