How much are graduate school stipends?
This depends on the subject. You’ll get more in sciences than in liberal arts, and then differences among individual subjects are subject to the rules of supply and demand. And then Boston College is likely to pay quite a bit more–on paper–than Vanderbilt and Tulane because cost of living is much higher in Boston than in Nashville or New Orleans. So run a cost of living comparison before making a decision based on the numbers, since $20k at BC would be the equivalent of less than $15k at one of the others. Broadly speaking, you might see a stipend for anywhere from $10k-25k. Not a very useful answer, I know, but every department is going to be different. Just ask the secretary for the departments you’re applying to. Or a graduate student there. Stipends are essentially a salary; it’s a paycheck that you use to pay the rent and buy your groceries. It’s enough to live on if you’re frugal and are not supporting a child/family on it alone. You may find that you have to live with roommate
