How much are coral reefs actually worth?
In the Florida Keys alone, it has been estimated that coral reefs contribute $440 million annually to the economy as a result of tourism; specifically, recreational diving, sport fishing, commercial fishing etc. In sum, coral reefs “are the foundation for a $1.3 billion tourism economy that provides over 13,600 jobs.” (EMS webpage) Globally it is estimated that coral reefs are worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $375 billion annually.
