How might the Cascadia subduction zone be linked to a tsunami?
The CSZ is a 600 mile long fault off the coasts of Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. It has a record of producing megathrust earthquakes around magnitude 9 on the Richter scale on an average of one per 350 years. A megathrust earthquake can displace the seabed vertically to a maximum of 30 feet, displacing enormous amounts of water and creating a tsunami. The most recent of these earthquakes was 305 years ago.
