How might the Asian HPAI H5N1 virus arrive in North America?
Bird migration is only one of the possible routes of introduction of the Asian HPAI H5N1 virus into North America. Travel by people who are infected or traveling with virus-contaminated articles, and illegal smuggling of birds or poultry products, are more direct and possibly more likely means of introducing the virus into theUnited States. The USDA has prohibited the import of any birds, poultry equipment, or poultry products from any country that has had the Asian HPAI H5N1virus diagnosed.
