How might I include poems in my discussions/lessons in science, social studies, math, and other subject areas?

I’ve found that there exists one poem (often more!) for every topic or skill area! The task, of course, is to find the right poem when you need it. The poetry section of your library contains many volumes of poems for children. And some of those volumes contain a subject-area index that will help you. If there’s no such index, make a list of some topics you and your children will be exploring in the near future. Then set aside a time to look through poetry collections to select poems that address those topics. Make notes or copy pages for quick referral later. Do keep in mind that–should you find a great poem that would have fit a lesson you presented last week or last month–that poem can offer a wonderfully-fun way to review prior knowledge!
