How marketing of onion is done for higher profits?
Ans.: In India onion is mainly grown during rabi season which is stored up to October November. There is acute shortage of onions after October to January till late kharif crop is harvested. During this period prices of onion rise. To obtain higher profits, area of kharif onion should be increased using kharif onion production technology developed by NRCOG. Onion harvested during kharif is not required to be stored due to higher price. Thus the crop should be planted in such a way that it can be regularly harvested from October to December to fetch higher prices. In our country farmers are not paying attention towards marketing. Grading and packing is most essential part in marketing. Onion should be graded according to different sizes and quality. Double bulbs, small or under size bulbs and bolters should be removed and marketed separately. Generally three grades viz. A, B and C grade should be done before marketing and packed in hessian cloth bags or nylon bags with proper label sepa
