In phase one, ten. The youth we want to help are age 16 to 24 and in some cases up to 29 years of age who are now at-risk and homeless. DYHSS opened Durham Youth House, an interim 10-bed emergency youth shelter on April 7, 2008. We are now working toward a combined facility that will ultimately establish an additional 50 beds/units of transitional housing and 10 beds/units of supportive housing. We plan to work across the community through multiple stakeholders. Our vision and hope is that service organizations, government, business, local and regional police, firefighters, faith groups and other community services providers along with volunteers will support our efforts in creating a place all youth can call home where they feel welcomed, accepted and valued.
