How many young do Poison Dart frogs typically produce during one breeding season?
Frogs living in the tropics, such as poison arrow frogs, often do not have distinct breeding seasons. Temperature is about the same year round, although there is often a wet and a dry season. These frogs are small, and they often take care of the tadpoles. Some species carry their tadpoles on their back and climb up trees to release the tadpole into tiny pools within bromeliads. Some release the tadpoles in pools on the forest floor. Because of their small size, they lay fewer eggs. To compensate for the low number of eggs, they generally provide more care to ensure a better chance of survival for each. Eggs are often laid on land, in moist places to prevent dessication and predation, and the tadpoles wriggle onto the back of their parents after hatching so they can be transported to water. Since there are nearly 200 species, it is impossible to generalize on the number of eggs they laid.
