(HIG | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) announced Thursday that it’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ramani Ayer plans to retire by end-2009. Ayer, in a statement to stakeholders, revealed his plans and said that the Board of Directors is starting an immediate, external search for a successor to find the right leader to drive the organization forward into its third century. In a statement, Ayer said, “I am fully committed to leading this organization during this period and to ensuring a smooth leadership transition as the company enters its third century. Ramani Ayer is the CEO and president of The Hartford. Ayer earned his B.S. in Chemical engineering from the Bombay campus of the Indian Institute of Technology in 1969 and his Ph.D. from Drexel University in 1973.[1][2] After graduating, Ayer was hired by The Hartford. Ayer became Vice President of HartRe in 1983, President of Hartford Specialty Company in 1986, Senior Vice President of The Hartford in 1989, Executive Vice President of The Hartford in 1990, and President and COO of the company’s property-casualty operations in 1991.[3] After being elected to the position in 1996, he took the office of Chairman and CEO of The Hartford on February 1, 1997.[4] In 2007, Ayer was one of only three foreign-born Indian-origin executives to run a Fortune 100 company.[5] Vikram Pandit of Citigroup and Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo are the other two.
