Ramani Ayer is the CEO and president of The Hartford. Ayer earned his B.S. in Chemical engineering from the Bombay campus of the Indian Institute of Technology in 1969 and his Ph.D. from Drexel University in 1973.[1][2] After graduating, Ayer was hired by The Hartford. Ayer became Vice President of HartRe in 1983, President of Hartford Specialty Company in 1986, Senior Vice President of The Hartford in 1989, Executive Vice President of The Hartford in 1990, and President and COO of the company’s property-casualty operations in 1991.[3] After being elected to the position in 1996, he took the office of Chairman and CEO of The Hartford on February 1, 1997.[4] In 2007, Ayer was one of only three foreign-born Indian-origin executives to run a Fortune 100 company.[5] Vikram Pandit of Citigroup and Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo are the other two.
