How many years did the hundred yearswar last?
The Hundred Years War started in 1337 and ended at the Battle of Castillon on 17 July 1453. The war came out of English claims to the crown of France but this was really just the excuse for the English to go on raids into France. Despite the English armies being smaller than the French and often in poor condition most of the battles of the war were dominated by English bowmen. These bowmen formed the greater part of the English army and they practically won the battles of Cressey and Agincourt. The English tactics relied upon the French mounted knights attacking their defencive positions on a broad front. The French usually obliged and were mown down by the accuracy and effectiveness of the English archer’s. The war finally came to an end at the battle of Castillon in 1453 where John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury then seventy years old assaulted French positions defended by artillery.
