How many words on average should an adult novel have per chapter?
It doesn’t matter about words per chapter. It matters about words per novel. A chapter can have as many words necessary to convery the plot of that chapter. But I would say the max word count for adult is 150,000 and no more. Fantasy can go over 150,000–it depends on what genre you’re writing. But if it’s not fantasy, try not to go over 150,000. Yes, there are books much longer, but those authors can get away with it. EDIT: 700 words? That’s like three pages. And 1,000 words? That’s about five or seven. That’s appropriate for a YA chapter, because YA is fast paced, but no appropriate for adult. EDIT: They do about 250.
