How many women currently participate in the Australian Defence Force?
As at 1 May 2010, 7,804 women make up 13.6 percent of the permanent full-time ADF: • 18.4 percent in Navy • 9.7 percent in Army, and • 16.9 percent in Air Force. Q: How many women are in senior positions? A: As at 1 May 2010, there were 36 women at the Colonel equivalent and above ranks in the ADF. Q: How many ADF jobs can women participate in? A: Women can serve in 93 percent of employment categories and 84 percent of positions in the ADF. Currently, women participate in 16 percent of the categories open to them across the full-time trained ADF: • 17.3 percent in Navy • 14.4 percent in Army, and • 17.1 percent in Air Force. Q: Can women serve in direct combat positions? A: No. The ADF is continuing research into setting objective physical employment standards appropriate for each category of employment.
