How many types of stones are there?
There are several kinds of stones viz; Calcium stones (Calcium oxalates, phosphate and carbonates), Uric acid stones, Struvite (or infection0 stones, Cystine stones and miscellaneous stones. Why do some people form stones while others don’t? Usually body has several protective mechanisms in place called stone inhibitors, buffers and products of metabolism. Only those who lack these in one way or the other forms stones. Largely the cause can be found out but there is also a group where the cause is unknown. How do kidney stones present? Kidney stones can present with severe pain in the flank and groin (especially if the stone has moved into the ureter – the tube carrying urine from the kidney to the bladder), so-called renal colic. This is usually associated with nausea and vomiting and haematuria (blood in the urine – either visible or on testing). Alternatively, kidney stones may be found when investigating patients with a urinary tract infection or haematuria How can it be detected?
