“We have just over 200 species. There’s a wading bird called a black-necked stilt. A pair of those showed up in the fall two years ago, and that was our 200th species.” 3. What other types of wildlife have been seen at Silver Bluff? “Lots of deer. An animal I like that you don’t see often elsewhere is a fox squirrel. They can have different color forms. We have flying squirrels out here, too, that are nocturnal for the most part. You’re liable to see a whole host of critters. Lots of turkeys, an occasional bobcat, beavers, otters and you might see alligators during the warm weather – you never know.” 4. What can people learn about local history at the site? “In our visitors’ center, we have a storyboard where we explain the early history of the area from American Indian inhabitants to DeSoto’s visit in the 1540s to George Galphin’s trading post. His trading post was actually taken over by the British during the Revolutionary War. All that property used to belong to Gov. (James) Hammond
