One, ton, is a measure of weight. The other, cubic yard, is a measure of volume. You cannot convert between the two any more than you can convert a color into a taste. They are two different things. So 1/0.8424 = 1.187 cubic yards of water would weigh one ton. Something heavier than water would have take than 1.187 cubic yards to weigh a ton and something lighter than water would take more than 1.187 cubic yards to weigh a ton.
