How many times can you take the SAT and ACT? Are they averaged?

It used to be that all your scores were sent to the schools, and they would take your best score in each section. But if you took it more than 3 times, schools would average your scores. But that changed this year. Now you decide which scores to send. But you can’t say reading from May and math from October. You tell them which test date,and they send the scores from that day. As far as I know, you can take them as often as you like.
