How many surgeries are performed per year at the Heart Institute, and all in all since its inception?
An average of about 500 heart surgeries are performed yearly by the 3 surgeons. In 2002, 572 operations were performed. The surgical volume has decreased somewhat the past few years, as it has all over the country, due to the increasing popularity of angioplasty and stenting. All in all over 4,000 heart surgeries have been performed at the Heart Institute since its inception in October 1997.
