In the 2000 01 school year, there were 47.2 million students enrolled in public elementary and secondary schools in the 50 states and the District of Columbia (table 1).1 Of these students, 26.2 million (55.5 percent) were in prekindergarten through grade 6, an additional 20.5 million (43.4 percent)
