Six students from Kern County have made the finals at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland. Sarah Moore of Centennial High School is one of 14 finalists in the senior division’s individual documentary category. Fruitvale Junior High School’s team of Marissa Manos, Ramneet Sahota, Bianca Hinojosa, Calvin Laverty and Sameen Bramer have reached the finals in the junior division. Results for a junior entry by Fruitvale’s Anne Bardet won’t be known until Thursday. The event is sponsored by National History Day Inc. and attracts participation each year from more than half a million students. All of the winners should be announced by Thursday, and the results will be posted on the National History Day Web site.

After two days of competition, six students from Kern County have made it through to the finals at National History Day taking place through Thursday at the University of Maryland. Centennial High’s Sarah Moore emerged as one of 14 finalists in the senior division individual documentary category after preliminary judging Tuesday. Moore’s project, “Silently Leaving a Legacy: The Actions of Chiune Sugihara,” was being judged again Wednesday along with the other finalists. Following the first day of judging on Monday, Fruitvale Jr. High’s junior division group performance team of Marissa Manos, Ramneet Sahota, Bianca Hinojosa, Calvin Laverty and Sameen Bramer also reached the finals in their category. The Fruitvale team’s entry, “Sylvia Mendez: The Legacy of a Young Girl’s Fight for Equality in Education,” had its final judging on Tuesday. Winners will be announced in all categories Thursday and results will be posted on the National History Day Web site,
